The Jesus Mobile

Balloon Powered Car Project

Ian and Jessica

Above is the Jesus Mobile.

This project was designed for us to learn about motion and forces.  We had to build a car that would reach five meters as fast as possible.  There were three trials of each car in the class, and then once all of the speeds were collected, we calculated the average speed.

The design of our car is a water bottle with four wheels.  As you can see above, the two back wheels are bigger than the front wheels, and have rubber bands around them to create more friction against the ground.  The wheel axels are taped to the bottom of the car instead of going through the car because originally, we thought that if the axels were on the bottom then it would eliminate a bit of air resistance.  The balloon has a straw going through it to A) make blowing up the balloon easier and B) to make the air filter out smoother than a frosty horchata.  Our car's unique feature is its ability to make it to 5 meters slowly, but get there eventually.
